it’s already Christmas time and another year is coming to an end.
2019 was as we expected was full of satisfaction and happy encounter, sometimes difficult and busy, but full of satisfaction and happy encounters. We met fantastic new artists, participated to many trade shows and developed new amazing products.
To this day, we are sure that 2020 will be at least as wonderful as last year, also thanks to your great support, new exciting meetings and music, strong friendships and many beautiful challenges.
For now, let's enjoy this wonderful time of year, the one where we love a little more and forget the past difficulties to give way to our dreams. During this tiny miracle, we would like to thank all our customers, the affectionate and the new ones, our collaborators, our artists and ambassadors and all those who somehow supported us in this great year.

Showtime for Schertler at the Grand Ole Opry
The Grand Ole Opry has an unrivalled reputation as America’s leading country music show. Since its inaugural performance on 28th November 1925, in Nashville, “the show that made country music famous” (as its slogan states), has grown from a simple radio broadcast to a live entertainment phenomenon.
The show first began to establish its great reputation in the 1930s and 40s - hosting the debut of Hank Williams in 1949, for example. During the following decade, many major artists performed there including Johnny Cash and Elvis Presley (on one occasion). In 1974, the show moved from the Ryman Auditorium to a new regular home at the Grand Ole Opry House, continuing to attract leading musicians such as Dolly Parton and Blake Shelton and enticing audiences from far and wide.
Since 2018, Schertler products have become an integral part of the show, used both in the Grand Ole Opry’s sound system and by individual house members and other musicians who have actively chosen to include 100% Swiss Made amplifiers, pickups and monitors in their stage setups.
Because of the banjo's unique overtones, it is a particularly difficult instrument to amplify. Often it's the tones that you don't want to hear that rise to the top when a pickup is installed. Autumn trade show round-up
Two events are beginning to emerge as regular fixtures in the Schertler trade show calendar. September saw the company’s second appearance at the Guitar Summit in Mannheim, while a cloudy weekend in November was made considerably brighter by a visit to SoundMit in Turin.
Schertler Sales Manager, Carlo Gervasini, reports:
“It’s the second time that Schertler has attended Guitar Summit in Mannheim, (the show itself is only three years old) and I must say, it has already become a great event for guitar enthusiasts. Visitors came from both Germany and the rest of Europe, representing a whole range of users. This was a perfect platform for our acoustic guitars, amplifiers and pickups. It was also an opportunity for us to meet new dealers. Guitar Summit is a really “friendly” show where exhibitors and visitors can meet in simple spaces and people can explore the different products.
SoundMit is another great show but for completely different reasons. This is one of southern Europe’s largest international shows focussing on synths and electronic musical instruments, so it was an opportunity for us to meet people that you normally don’t find at “regular” music instrument trade shows. It was also chance to showcase our ARTHUR 48 and Prime mixers, both on our booth and in presentations given by Stephan Schertler. These products really stole the show, getting more awareness and appreciation from musicians, DJs, broadcasters and sound engineers. A special weekend with special devices that deserves an encore!”
In concert with the Gnu Quartet and Schertler
Since its formation in 2006, the Gnu Quartet has achieved international success with a range of original projects and collaborations. Over the years, the players have relied on Schertler STAT V and STAT C pickups to ensure the most natural reproduction of their string sound in an amplified environment.
In October, Schertler’s Artist Relations Manager, Giulia Schertler, met up with Roberto (violin), Stefano (violin), Rafaele (viola) and Francesca (flute) during a soundcheck before their performance at the Teatro Regio in Turin.The quartet revealed that it was not their first time in the beautiful theatre, having already played there 10 years ago with the great Niccolò Fabi and Gino Paoli.
"Obviously we were already using Schertler products at that time" says Roberto.
At the Teatro Regio, the quartet’s STAT pickups were connected to Schertler Yellow Blender preamps. These offer highest levels of sound quality while allowing the performers flexibility to adjust various sound parameters.
Roberto and Raffaele describe the importance of the Schertler brand for their music:
"When you start playing, you focus on giving your all and learning your best. The more you go on, the more you understand that it's not just about this, but about sound. You have to educate yourself about sound, and that's something you only learn through experience, but it's indispensable. When we started, the amplification detracted rather than enhancing [the sound]. Schertler was our turning point and always allows us to transmit a clean and emotional sound.”

Schertler’s DYN-C offers the baryton a wider audience
The baryton is a historic bowed instrument, resembling a viola da gamba, which contains an additional set of sympathetic strings that can also be simultaneously plucked. The classical composer Haydn produced around 160 works for the little-known instrument. Two hundred years later, The Valencia Baryton Project - a chamber music ensemble formed by double bass player Matt Baker and colleagues from the opera of the Palau de les Arts in Valencia - is performing the works written by Haydn in various formations with the baryton. But as Matt has discovered, the instrument, together with Schertler’s DYN-C pickup has potential for wider musical appeal:
“I fell in love with the baryton in 2004 while transcribing some Haydn duos for cello and double bass that were originally written for two barytons. At the time, I couldn’t imagine actually playing the instrument – there are only a handful of people that play it – but the music was so beautiful that the idea lodged itself in my head. A few years later I was transcribing (once again) Haydn’s baryton trios for violin, viola and double bass and I thought again about taking up the instrument but where to start?
As luck would have it, here in Spain there was one person playing the instrument, Jose Manuel Hernandez, and after trying the instrument I was able to purchase it through the help of a sponsor who believed in the vision that I had for encompassing all types of music without placing any boundaries.
The instrument is a mix between a viola da gamba and a bordone (early lute) with 6 strings on the front that are bowed and another 10 behind the fingerboard that can be played with the thumb or just resonate with the instrument creating an eerie but beautiful sound, like having your own reverb box built into your instrument.
This little-known instrument is most famous for its use in Franz Joseph Haydn’s nearly 160 works for the instrument, composed for the Prince Esterhazy in the 18th century. But the instrument has a quality that lends itself wonderfully to contemporary, world and jazz crossover music. However, one of its limitations is that it is designed as a chamber instrument to be used in small halls, not as a super-projecting instrument to fill a large hall without amplification.
With Schertler and the DYN-C mic, I have been able to overcome that limitation and with their microphone I can pursue the collaborations that I have been working on in the jazz and world music communities as well as broadening the scope of performance with my own chamber ensemble, the Valencia Baryton Project, allowing us to perform in any hall or space. I have finally been able to perfectly amplify this unique sound to allow me to use it in ways that were up to now impossible, or impractical to consider. With the impeccable quality of sound it transmits, the DYN-C has opened up a whole new door to the possibilities of using the baryton or any other similar instrument in contemporary settings.
Since I began to use Schertler products I have been amazed at the trueness of sound quality that they provide. I started with the Stat B Pro double bass mic and preamp and was blown away by the fact that what was coming out of my speakers was exactly my double bass sound, whether it was arco or pizz.
Now I’ve added the DYN – C mic to my baryton and have been able to effortlessly amplify an instrument that even seasoned sound engineers find difficult to mic and isolate in a performance setting. I wasn’t sure I’d ever find the perfect solution for amplifying the baryton but with Schertler mics, I have.
